Elton john rocket man hq11/3/2023 ![]() I remember at one point thinking that the song was a metaphor for being a gay man stuck in a straight marriage. ![]() Given the time when the song was written and the events going on (Apollo 16 mission etc.) and the overall influence that space travel and missions were having on popular culture it wouldn't be all that far out of left field. that is MASSIVE no matter how you slice it. Elton John and Bernie Taupin have a 30 album collaboration record. The Rocket Man song I've always thought of as more of a Bernie Taupin creation. So my question is, can British Subjects understand what "Sir John" is singing? Is he comprehensible to his own countrymen? "Candle in the Wind" is the only comprehensible song that I can think of, out of, come on, how many songs? This morning in the car we heard "Crocodile Rock." Neither of us have any idea whatsoever, not even a little bit, what he was singing, but the song sounds great. Even to save my life I could not tell you what "Rocket Man" is about. But by and large, we cannot understand what he is singing. (The guy's piano skill - wow!!!) But - and here's the question - we have no idea what he's singing.Ī few words here and there, sure, and a line or two in the refrain, sure, we get it. We like it, and this mostly because it just sounds beautiful. It sounds beautiful, it's fun, it's catchy, it's all-around great music. ![]() My daughter and I have talked about this many times, and we're in complete agreement. After the success of the "why do English singers sound American?" thread, I gotta ask another question.
